What’s the Buzz About Mother of Pearl Jewelry?

It is a common misconception that mother of pearl is a gemstone. Instead, it is the outmost layer of a pearl. Some mollusks produce this material as a reinforcing inner covering for their shells. It has an iridescent quality. In the past, mother of pearl was a popular material for use in button manufacture. Today, the harvesting of the nacre must meet stringent regulations to prevent the use of mollusks on the endangered species list. It is interesting to note that scientists have been able to grow artificial mother of pearl using calcium. But when only the real thing will do, browse our inventory of attractive mother of pearl vintage jewelry.

This designer pendant features a quartz top and a silver construction. An 18k yellow gold braid surrounds the cushion checkerboard that features pink mother of pearl. From top to bottom, the pendant measures 29.67mm. From side to side, the measurement is 16.87mm. At a depth of 8.71mm, this pendant offers a substantial appearance.

Mother of Pearl Inlay Earrings Featuring Black Onyx and White Diamonds

Black onyx is the ideal counterpart to the ten round mother of pearl cutouts. Artisans set the stone and nacre in 18k white gold. At the center of each earring is a diamond pave. Both paves consist of a total of 14 round diamonds with a combined weight of .06cts. Clip and post backs make wear of these jewels comfortable. These circular earrings have a width of 17.53mm. What makes the appearance so unique are the slight variations of display that the mother of pearl brings to the mix.

Designer Mother of Pearl Slice Earrings with Diamonds

Identified as Meira T originals, these earrings begin with 14k white gold settings. They hold natural mother of pearl slices that display the famous iridescent blue and white tones. Artisans preserved the markings to enhance the beauty of the pieces. Surrounding each slice, you see a diamond pave. In total, there are 148 round diamonds with a combined weight of .98cts. From top to bottom, the dangle earrings measure 98.26mm. Their width is 23.79mm.

Carter Gough Carved Mother of Pearl Inlays with Diamonds

We are fairly confident that these pieces are unique. They date to the 1900s and are Carter Gough originals. The dangling design features platinum as well as 14k yellow gold. The most remarkable style elements are the sets of patiently hand-carved mother of pearl discs. One set measures 5mm in width while the other one measures 10mm. Four single-cut diamonds weigh a combined .08cts; each stone displays at the center of a disc. From top to bottom, the earrings measure 21.63mm. If you only look at one set of mother of pearl jewels today, make it this one.
