We Match Our Jewelry to Vivien Leigh’s Jewelry!

Thousands of actresses wanted the role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind but the role went to Vivien Leigh. We loved her cat eyes and winning smile—and her master of a Southern accent stole our hearts in the film—she was Scarlet as much as Clark Gable was Rhett Butler. With 20 films to her credit to her 30 stage performances, to her marriage to Laurence Olivier who called her “Vivling,” Vivien played the sweet, the cunning and even a mistress in That Hamilton Woman, which co-starred then husband Olivier.

Born on November 5, 1913 in Darjeeling India, Vivien and her family moved back to England when she was six years old—her father English, her mother of Irish descent.  Vivien was married twice; first to barrister Leigh Holman—he 32, she 19 (1932-1940) and then to Laurence Olivier from 1940 to 1960.

She won two Oscars—one for her role as Scarlet O’Hara in Gone With the Wind (1939) and also for her role as Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Everyone has their favorite “Vivling” film from her first, Things Are Looking Up (1934) to her last, Ship of Fools (1964) and fans adored her natural beauty. Here, we bring you some little known facts about Vivien Leigh:

  • She was very fond of cats and had several—almost all Siamese.
  • Vivien was drawn to water and lived in homes that were in close proximity to lakes or rivers.
  • She had a knack for entertaining and could have had a second career as an event planner.
  • Vivien’s favorite drink was gin and soda with lemon.
  • She disliked critics and reviewers and never got over her fear of flying—although she did travel by plane.
  • Vivien had one child, Suzanne, born to first husband, Leigh Holman. Unfortunately, Vivien suffered two miscarriages while married to Laurence Olivier.

Perhaps the following quote by Vivien describes her normalcy off-screen but once she was up on the silver screen or the curtain opened, Vivien Leigh wowed us, amused us and above all, entertained us.

“I realize that the memories I cherish most are not the first night successes, but of simple, everday things: walking through our garden in the country after rain; sitting outside a café in Provence, drinking the vin de pays; staying at a little hotel in an English market town with Larry, in the early days after our marriage, when he was serving in the Fleet Air Arm, and I was touring Scotland, so that we had to make long treks to spend weekends together.”

A true entertainer, yet so down to earth. Below, we thought it would be fun to match our jewelry to Vivien Leigh’s jewelry and because Peter Suchy Jewelers are experts at vintage and estate jewelry, we think we did a pretty nice job!

The Gone With the Wind Emerald Earrings

When Vivien’s Scarlett O’Hara thought she might be losing her beloved Tara, she wore these synthetic green emerald and diamond earrings (1.03 carats in each) which were surrounded by 10 clear (CZ) diamonds.

Our match to these emerald diamond earrings? These vintage 3.25 carat green emerald and 1.20 carat diamond earrings set in 18K yellow gold.

The Gone With the Wind Ruby Earrings

To entice Rhett to take her home to Tara, Vivien wore these synthetic ruby and diamond earrings. Each earring boasted a synthetic  4.72 carat ruby, which dropped from a large clear (CZ) diamond stud. So pretty and dangled from her ears so brightly!

A challenge to match these, we think our estate gold blood red ruby and white diamond hinged dangle earrings do a pretty good job with the “dangle” effect. We love these hand-made earrings—simply stunning with round diamonds (.66 carats) and 3.20 carats of blood red rubies.

That Hamilton Woman Diamond Earrings

In the film, That Hamilton Woman, Vivien wore these marquise clear cut (CZ) diamond dangle earrings—also known as “stately earrings.” An awesome match to her character’s style.

Our match to these stately diamond earrings? We think these circa 1950-1960 14K white gold brilliant diamond dangle earrings are a perfect match. With four brilliant cut and 14 single cut diamonds, the approximate total weight is approximately .45 carats.
