Oscar Heyman Jewelry: A Family’s Love for Design

The history of the Oscar Heyman Jewelry collection dates back to 1906. Brothers Oscar and Nathan Heyman came to the United States from their native Latvia. Prior to their arrival, the brothers trained in the world-famous Faberge workshop. There, an uncle showed them the secrets to working with platinum, which was just then gaining momentum in the jewelry trade. Not surprisingly, Oscar quickly found employment at Cartier’s New York shop on Fifth Avenue.

By 1912, the rest of the Heyman family followed Oscar and Nathan. At that time, the brothers opened the Oscar Heyman & Bros. workshop. Due to the connections they had made since 1906, their clients soon included notable jewelers such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels. They worked so extensively on the latter jewelers’ invisible settings that their reputation took off along with Van Cleef & Arpels’.

Over time, the Heyman brothers established themselves as public favorites in the fields of flora-motif jewelry. Experts in the trade rewarded them with numerous awards for artisanship and quality in artistry. Over the course of the decades, Oscar Heyman was a name that became synonymous with platinum jewelry that showed exquisite designs featuring diamonds, emeralds and other precious stones.

The jewelry business remains in the hands of the family that started it, and the third generation has now entered the business. Continuing in the European tradition of jewelry design and detail work, shoppers currently have the choice of five fine jewelry collections.

Patriotic jewelry. Platinum is the medium that displays rubies, sapphires and diamonds in the reproduction of the American flag.

Animals. Whimsy, meticulous attention to detail and gorgeous stones make up the collection of pins and brooches in this collection. Some of these pieces also feature the South Sea pearl in its gorgeous beauty.

Holidays. Christmas is a big deal and the carefully crafted brooches highlight Santa Claus, a poinsettia and a wreath in stunning detail. Traditional colors make these designs shine.

Flowers. Just like the animal collection, the flowers selection is a testament to painstaking artistry that delights in the attention to the minutest details. The play of light and shadow accentuates lifelike productions of flower petals and heads.

Men’s jewelry. This collection includes some pieces already showcased in other lines. The emphasis of the pieces is on masculine chic that bespeaks the wearer’s hobbies and interests.

Of course, the Oscar Heyman Jewelry brand is still very much associated with custom and estate jewelry. Special commissions are always welcomed, and jewelry experts work with clients to make their original ideas become realities. The artisans also offer to reconfigure existing estate pieces that have lost their luster or miss a few pieces. As one of the most enduring names in American jewelry, Oscar Heyman remains a much sought-after jeweler of connoisseurs and experts alike.
