Bona fide art history buffs know that lapis lazuli was
instrumental in bringing ultramarine blue pigment to Middle Age painters, who
would then use the hue – almost exclusively – to portray the robes of saints.
When we recently touched on a pair of earrings featuring lapis, interest sprang
up in this semi-precious stone. What makes this gem stand out is its beauty
that comes to the forefront when polished.
Another point of interest is its color spectrum. Although
blue is the accepted tone, there are also those lapis gems that feature slight
green tints, some pyrite flecks, and even a bit of violet. That said, the most
desirable color is the one associated with the ultramarine blue. We have put
together a collection of lapis jewels we love. Which ones are your favorites?
Violet to Deep Blue Lapis Ring with Diamonds from the 1950s
Artisans began the ring’s design with a 14k yellow gold
setting. It holds a violet to blue lapis cut into an oval cabochon. The stone’s
coloration is rare. Eight white, round diamonds encircle the gem. Their
combined weight is .40cts. This 1950s ring features a Karbra stamp. It has a
top width of 27.14mm, which makes it an ideal cocktail ring. When you inspect
the careful working of the gold, the style elements of the era are evident.
This untreated lapis rests in an 18k yellow and white gold setting. The yellow beautifully accentuates the mottled appearance of the
startlingly blue stone that measures 17mm by 14mm by 12.5mm. Jewelry makers
added ten white round, full-cut diamonds with a collective weight of .35cts.
They set them into the white gold portions of the ring’s design. The resulting
appearance is sure to get you plenty of admiring looks from those who have
never seen a lapis stone close up.
To say that this 14k yellow gold bangle bracelet is a work
of art would be an understatement. Jewelry makers from the 1950s created a
gorgeous setting that nestles six bright blue lapis stones. They measure
16.64mm by 6.20mm. These pieces include Iron Pyrite. Choose this bangle
bracelet for the appeal of its dark stones or the unique hand engraving of the
gold sections. Whether you wear it for a special occasion or to the office, the
jewel beautifully accessorizes wardrobe selections of red, green, blue, and
white as well as other colors.
