Our Favorite Vintage Cabochon Cut Gemstone Jewelry

Flat on the bottom but domed on the top, cabochon-cut gems highlight the beauty of the stone by polishing rather than faceting it. Artisans usually like to use this cut on opaque gems as well as those that test at – or lower than – seven on the Mohs hardness scale. This would include quartz, feldspar and apatite varieties. Another reason for choosing to cut en cabochon is the presence of cats’ eye or star variations. A Peter Suchy Jewelers, we have a wide variety of these amazing gems in gorgeous settings.

Gold Ring with Cabochon-Cut Opal and Full-Cut Diamonds

The artisans created this vintage ring with 18k solid yellow gold. An oval opal weighing 4.0cts features an astonishing translucency that highlights its blue and green hues with the occasional green flash. Twenty-four full-cut diamonds weighing in at .50cts surround the opal. Combined with the light texturing of the gold setting and the prongs holding the stones in place, this ring is an eye-catching piece of jewelry.

Gold Clip Post Earrings with Citrines and Diamonds

Made for pierced lobes, the jewelry maker chose 14k solid yellow gold for the setting of these earrings. Two cabochon-cut citrines weighing 9.0cts make up the focal gemstones of these pieces. They are flanked by eight full-cut diamonds weighing .20cts. There is a depth to the citrines that makes it easy to lose yourself in the gems.

White Gold Earrings with Blue Chalcedonies and Diamonds

Set in 18k white gold, the blue cabochon-cut chalcedonies display a gorgeous translucency. The color reminds of a dove gray or a very light blue. Measuring 10mm by 8mm, these gems weigh in at a combined 4.0cts. Diamonds add sparkle to the earrings. Eighteen full-cut round diamonds weigh .28cts and have been clustered at the top of the settings. The resulting look is very sophisticated.

Platinum Ring with Black Opal and Diamonds

This 1920s Art Deco ring uses the platinum setting material that was all the rage at the time. The cabochon cut displays the full beauty of the black opal that features green, orange and blue flashes. Weighing in at 6.50cts, this is a sizable gem! The ring gets its sparkle from six emerald-cut diamonds weighing .40cts. Due to its unique nature and size, this ring easily becomes the focal point of your jewelry ensemble.

White Gold Greek Key Design Necklace with Sapphires and Diamonds

Artisans chose 18k solid white gold for the Greek key design necklace. Accents of yellow gold highlight the beauty of the setting material. At a length of 18 inches, this necklace rests beautifully near the throat. There are 28 cabochon-cut sapphires and 42 full-cut diamonds. The total combined gemstone weight is .42cts.
