Always the ‘femme fatale” in the films she made, there was
something about Marlene Dietrich that made men swoon. Moviegoers in Old
Hollywood raced to see her films and her long time partnership with her mentor and
director Josef von Sternberg who first casted her in The Blue Angel (1930) was a partnership that would span seven
films.
Born on December 27, 1901
in Schoneberg, Berlin Germany, Marlene’s
given name was Marie Magdalene Dietrich and her nickname was “Lili Marlene.” At
only five feet, four inches, Marlene was large as life on the screen even when
co-starring with the mighty (and secret lover) John Wayne. Marlene would make
three films with Wayne, Pittsburgh
(1942), The Spoilers (1942) and The Seven Sinners (1940).
Marlene married Rudolf Sieber on May 17, 1923 and although
the couple lived apart for many years, she remained married to him until his
death in 1976, and never remarried. She was nominated for an Oscar for her role
in Morocco (1930) and received a
Golden Globe Award for the film Witness
for the Prosecution (1957).
After her film career, in the mid-1950s Marlene took her
talents on the road and had quite the stage career in Las Vegas, Nevada. By the
mid-1970s she moved to Paris, gave up show business and died as a recluse on
May 6, 1992.
A fashion trendsetter on and off the screen, some of Marlene
Dietrich quotes include:
“I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public,
not for fashion, not for men.”
“Most women set out to try and change a man, and when they
have changed him they do not like him.”
“Darling, the legs aren’t so beautiful, I just know what to
do with them!”
We adored Marlene Dietrich movies
too and we thought it would be fun to match our vintage jewelry to pieces
Marlene wore.
The Seven Sinners Diamond Earrings
In the film which co-starred John
Wayne, Marlene’s character Bijou wore these stunning diamond earrings. Each
earring boasted 4.33 carats of (CZ) diamonds and were plated in rhodium.
Our match to Marlene’s earrings? These
vintage old mine diamond earrings
totaling 2.21 carats set in platinum. Bright and so
lovely on the ears!
Femme Fatale Diamond Necklace
Director Josef von Sternberg worked
hard with Dietrich to help her maintain that femme fatale image. Marlene wore this diamond necklace made of
square clear cut (CZ) diamonds. With rhodium plating, this publicity necklace
was 16 inches in length.
Our match to the femme fatale
necklace? Our vintage 1920s Art Deco mixed cut diamond platinum dangle necklace with a 17-inch chain. Gorgeous—this necklace
is a rare one-of-a-kind piece of handmade jewelry!
The Morocco Diamond Ring
It appears Marlene enjoyed the
sparkle of diamonds! In the movie Morocco,
she wore this 5.18 carat (CZ) diamond ring surrounded by four pear-shaped
baguettes. So stunning on the finger of
our favorite Old Hollywood femme fatale!
Our match to this Marlene’s diamond
ring? We think this vintage 2.59 carat vintage engagement ring with a transitional cut set in platinum matches
perfectly!
