What Are Eternity Rings?

Eternity rings are considered the perfect gifts for a husband to give to his wife on the occasion of a 60th anniversary. Even in ancient Egyptian times, this kind of present was considered a worthwhile investment. Modern men do not make their wives wait this long; they give these rings on the tenth, 15th or on the occasion of a similar milestone anniversary. Plenty of husbands have begun to also give this type of ring to celebrate a child’s birth or even after the successful completion of the first year of marriage.

The primary material of an eternity ring is gold or platinum. Set all around the ring are uniformly-cut diamonds. If you are ready to make the purchase – and you know exactly what ring size to buy – consider that there are still a few more choices to be made. Pick out the width of the finished band. Traditionally, eternity rings are slim and sometimes fit beautifully next to a wedding or engagement ring. Choose a setting style and then select a diamond shape to go with it. Pick out your diamonds by color and clarity. In some cases, you may be able to intersperse gemstones between the diamonds to save a bit of money.  If you give the eternity ring on the occasion of a child’s birth, consider selecting the child’s birth stone to complement the collection of diamonds.

For the shopper who prefers to save a bit of money – or the recipient who finds it uncomfortable to wear diamonds underneath the finger – there is the half-eternity model that features settings over half of the band only. Due to the setting of the diamonds, it is a good idea to be certain of the sizing. Re-sizing these rings is very difficult because it disturbs the diamonds set around the band. While many jewelers refuse to do this work on eternity rings, many of them will work on half-eternity models.

The symbolism of giving this type of gift is clear. Supplementing the engagement and wedding rings, this anniversary gift provides precious stones not just at the center but all around the ring. De Beers has been a driving force in the marketing of these rings since the 1960s. One of their slogans was, “She married you for richer or poorer. Let her know how it’s going.” Not surprisingly, buyers are willing to dig a bit deeper in their pockets to purchase this type of band.

Whereas in the past, the setting of the band was commonly straight, modern jewelers and artisans are introducing a bit of style variety to the concept. Claw and bezel settings have opened up the door to a wide array of new styles. No longer relying on the channel setting or a bar setting, new styles now allow for looks that imitate ropes, flowers and continuous hearts. There are even half-eternity settings that feature clusters of diamonds, which remind of roses.
