Do Gemstones Have Healing Powers?

Over the course of the centuries, gemstone lovers did not just appreciate the beautiful cuts, dazzling colors and gorgeous appearances of gemstones. There are a variety of tales and folklore accounts that ascribe healing powers to numerous gems. From ancient healers to modern shamans, energy therapists have long held the belief that every gemstone has a unique energy pattern that interacts with the human body’s energy field.

Agate. The agate is believed to counteract stomach upsets. Since it is said to attract strength, it also protects against stress, bad dreams and tiredness.

Amethyst. If insomnia is a problem, the amethyst may be able to get you some sound sleep. It also relieves joint pain and deals with problems in the circulatory system.

Carnelian. Do you know someone with a dour disposition? Give your friend a carnelian pendant. This gem protects from moodiness, fits of rage and financial losses.

Citrine. Promising you abundance, the citrine does not necessarily lead you to more money. Sometimes, this abundance can be friendship, food or contentment. In addition, this stone has been believed to counteract hearing loss.

Emerald. Heal heart problems and eye disease with an emerald. Depending on the lore, you may have to place the stone in a glass of water overnight. When you wake up the next day, wash your eyes with the water.

Peridot. Counteracting the aging process, the peridot also lessens stress and balances out relational harmonies.

It is interesting to note that gemstone healing powers are sometimes believed to be directly related to the quality and cut of the stone. Modern healers warn that gemstones must be of the highest available quality for healing powers to fully flow. Moreover, they argue that plenty of high-quality stones are unsuitable by virtue of their cuts. For best effects, a gem should feature a spherical cut. Working with this type of stone allows the energy to freely flow and mingle with the human body’s energy field.

In the past, some old wives’ tales called for the grinding up and ingestion of certain stones. For example, in the Middle Ages the accidental or deliberate poisoning of foods with deadly herbs, toxic mushrooms and animal venoms was commonplace. While some gemstones might counteract a poison just by having the wearer wave it over the dish in question, amethysts or emeralds had to be ground up and pieces added to the food. Some nobles hedged their bets by having drinking cups and plates made from these gemstones.

Modern energy healers deem that wearing a necklace with a properly cut gemstone delivers the most potent energy. From the neck area, the gem gradually radiates its healing energy throughout the human body. While the process takes a little while to start working, the closeness of the gem to the skin and body makes this therapy easy. Some healers have also begun experimentation with necklaces featuring a mix of gemstones that work together in harmony to address multiple health concerns.
