Stamford, CT, Actor Proposes on Stage!

Is there anything more beautiful than a well done marriage proposal? Kevin Thompson, a Stamford actor who played Cassio in Shakespeare on the Green’s performance of “Othello,” certainly ensured that the audience and his bride-to-be were treated to a perfectly executed proposal. She, Julia Maggiola, had just finished playing her part as Desdemona and never saw it coming.

As noted by the Stamford Advocate, the clearly romantic Thompson had neatly dotted his i’s and crossed his t’s. A week previously, he had formally asked Maggiola’s parents for her hand in marriage. With the parental blessing assured, Thompson squared things with the show’s director before setting an unforgettable curtain call into motion.

What made this Shakespeare on the Green performance so special for Thompson and Maggiola, who had been dating for about four years? It was on this particular stage at curtain call that Thompson fell in love and recognized Maggiola as his soul mate.

Gentlemen, it is here that you might want to listen up and take note. Being romantic might come naturally to Mr. Thompson, but it may not be your forte. Not only did he plan his marriage proposal to take place at the exact place where the couple first met, but he also had an engagement ring ready to go. This particular ring had been in his possession for about a year, which clearly shows that Thompson is an excellent and patient planner.

Of course, the Stamford marriage proposal is not the first time this year that an actor has taken to the stage to propose. The BBC reported that a Welsh National Opera singer did the same thing in May. Jon Roche and Polly Greenwood met in opera school and had been dating for nine years. After a dress rehearsal performance of Lohengrin, the tenor used the time of the curtain call as the occasion for his proposal.

It is interesting to note that Mr. Roche, too, is clearly very much a fan of meticulous planning. Giving some thought to the perfect time and locale for the marriage proposal, he, too, had a ring hidden in his costume. Inspired by the fact that the traditional wedding march is actually a piece of the Lohengrin music, he ensured the opera company’s approval before proceeding.

For the man in need of inspiration for a great wedding proposal, the blueprint is clear. Find a romantic place – where you first met or where a particular aspect of the venue reminds of weddings – and come prepared with an engagement ring. Get the approval of the venue owner or operator, get a parental blessing, and you are on your way. Ladies, you might want to print out this blog post and let your significant other find it. Who knows, you may be treated to a romantic proposal as well.
